Just because you are having salad does not necessarily mean it is a healthy option. Many salads, especially if prepared by fast food restaurants are high in fat and sodium. Always opt for a home-made salad or be very cautious when choosing a store bought or restaurant option. Chances are you’re better off asking for a custom order.
Salads also vary in their quality; for example, there is a HUGE difference between an iceberg lettuce salad with cucumbers, croutons, and Caesar dressing compared to one with spinach, kale, carrots & cucumbers. A quick and healthy dressing would be some extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar.
Introducing complex carbs like quinoa or roasted sweet potato/ zucchini/ eggplant along with a lean protein (chicken, fish, turkey, chickpeas, beans, etc.) will not only help you stay fuller longer but give you the nutrient spectrum required for optimal body function.
Q: What Should I Do when I’m Still Hungry After Dinner and All I Want to Do is Raid the Fridge?
We like the 15-minute rule of thumb. How does it work? It’s simple. If you’re still feeling hungry after dinner, try drinking a nice tall glass of water and wait 15 minutes. Chances are the feeling of hunger will pass.
If you are still hungry after this time then perhaps you under ate and should have a light snack to compensate. The body’s signalling for dehydration mimics hunger pains, and we often eat to compensate.
If you’re still hungry you may need to evaluate what you’re eating throughout the day, or re-calculate your estimated energy requirement.
Q: Can I Really Eat an Endless Amount of Fruits and Still Lose Weight?
Fruits are generally a great source of fibre, vitamins, and antioxidants. With that being said, they still do have a sugar content. This is not to say fruits are bad for you, however moderation should be exercised when considering the quantity of fruit you are eating, especially if weight loss is your goal.
Once again fruit is an essential part of anyone’s lifestyle, however it’s a good idea to stick with lower sugar fruits like strawberries, raspberries, and cantaloupe. A daily consumption of fruit measuring out to 2-3 servings a day should be sufficient. Individual needs may vary however.
Q: Is a Fasting Diet a Good Way to Cut Calories?
Here at Back2Life Fitness we do not believe in the fasting diet approach. This is because we like to promote a healthy and balanced lifestyle change rather than introducing more stress and restriction into our clients lives.
Deliberate fasting can be effective at first but can seriously mess around with your metabolism in the long term. Fasting may also cause a fixation on food while you are “fasting”, causing you to over eat when it’s time to eat.
The advice we like to give is eat when you are hungry. Listen to your body, we are all different. If you are hungry, eat.
