I've been doing this for quite a bit of time now. This is my 9th year in the fitness arena, and my 4th in the industry as a professional trainer. I was young and green, eager to gain clients and start helping them with their goals. I guess you can say I've been around; have seen and done quite a bit over the years.
I started off training clients at their condo and home gyms, worked for big box boot camp chains like Fit body Boot Camp, and have now settled into my personal training studio space, having carved out my niche; Fat Loss and Strength training.
What I can tell you, is that the quality of your trainer is paramount. A trainers importance in your equation for fat loss is absolutely critical; making the difference between achieving your goals, and not.
That's why it's important for you to be able to identify what qualifies as a good and competent trainer. If, and only if, they pass the "sniff test" are they worthy of training you.
With that being said it's important to consider the following when meeting with your trainer:
Professionalism and Punctuality
This one is by far the most important. First impressions are everything, and I've learned that the easy, and hard way. Your trainer doesn't need to be dressed in the latest designer fitness gear, but should't look like she's going to the club right after your session. A fitness professional with high regard for himself dresses to impress, and wouldn't dream of being late for one of your appointments.
One more thing regarding punctuality; if they were late to your consultation meeting, that's usually a hint as to how future sessions will start off (unless there happens to be an emergency or something out of their control- things do happen here and there).
Pay Attention to the Questions they Ask You
Although it's extremely important for you to be asking questions, it's even more crucial that you analyze what questions the trainer is asking you. A good trainer will ask you about your goals, current routine, and nutrition habits in order to get a better sense of your day to day life and trends. I can't stress how important it is that these questions be addressed right off the bat- so that expectations can be immediately set and held accountable to. A great trainer will ask more questions than give answers, remember this. If your trainer does not appear to be listening to you, she's failed the sniff test.
The Focus is on Form
I think it's safe to say that if you're coming to a professional for your fat loss and strength goals, you want to do so in a safe and effective manner- with little to no risk of injury. This being the most important sniff test of all in.
If your potential trainer does not perform a fitness assessment on you, then that's a huge red flag for you to get out of there. We have a saying among us trainers; "if you're not assessing, you're guessing". Guessing is exactly what your trainer is doing when they don't give you a thorough assessment. You're smart enough to know that guessing leads to mistakes, and mistakes are costly for you- not the trainer.
Invested in Your Success
As your fitness coach i'm you're number one fan. It's my passion to push you to be the best version of yourself, and to achieve results you never thought possible. I believe and am committed to you no matter the ups and downs. As long as you continue to commit - i'll always be in your corner.
If this is not the vibe you are getting from your trainer, then something is wrong. If the person you are hiring to get you results doesn't seem interested in getting you them, do you think he'll put effort into it?
Well, there you have it. I've given you 4 sniff tests to run by your current or prospect personal trainer. Treat yourself like a business. You're interviewing your trainer because you want the best person for the job.
There is nothing better than having a dedicated, competent trainer, who does his best to make sure you are happy, healthy, and transformed.
I have too much respect for you to let you choose a garbage trainer. I want to ensure you're using these tips effectively so that you can get the best results poss
ible, from the best trainer available.
